The Movement Room Meadow Active Lifestyle Community

The environment can influence mood. Bright rooms with an abundance of natural light and soothing colors can ease stress, increase motivation, and promote healthy activity. The movement room, a multipurpose fitness and wellness space at the Meadow Active Lifestyle Community, achieves these goals with its modern and open design, which encour- ages residents to participate in fitness activities. Meadow Ac- tive Lifestyle Community, an independent living neighborhood within a larger campus, is located in Louisville and operated by Masonic Communities Kentucky. Earlier phases of the 82-acre community included smaller

fitness spaces which quickly became too small for demand. To allow for added space, the Meadow was planned with two 1,300-square-foot fitness rooms. The movement room provides

space for a wide variety of activities, including yoga classes, dance lessons, and special events.

The design of the movement room encourages activity. The

bright and cheery room has plenty of natural light and light floor- ing. Sky blue walls with dark blue accents echo the natural out- door environment. The high ceilings are covered with creatively styled modern hanging lamps of different sizes in blue, green, and orange. Simply, it’s a fun place to get moving. An innovative feature of the movement room is its interac- tive training technology. Residents can select their own workout video and watch it on a big screen in the movement room. A variety of video classes is also available including dance, run- ning, and exercise workouts. Project architect John Cronin considers activity spaces such as the movement room to be essential to today’s senior living communities. “Fitness is part of today’s lifestyle,” said Cronin, principal at AG Architecture.
