PEOPLE AND PLACES
Family Business that found the average lifes- pan of a family-owned business is just 24 years. Mills promotion transitions the family’s third generation into the top leadership role, despite a 2010 study that found just 13% of family-owned businesses are passed down suc- cessfully to a third generation. According to an article in the Harvard Business Review, family businesses fared better during the pandemic as these leaders tend to think in terms of gener- ations rather than being obsessed with hitting quarterly earnings targets. This allows these companies to take actions that put them in a better position to endure the tough times.
Emerald Heights, a Life Plan Community in Redmond, Wash., has promoted Alexandra Clark to wellness programs manager, a new po- sition in the company. In her new role, Clark will still oversee these two areas of service, but she will also be overseeing the fi tness program. Prior to joining Emerald Heights, Clark taught theater and Zumba classes to senior living communi- ties. She found a passion for working with se- niors during this time and when a full-time role presented itself. The fi tness department con- sists of three fi tness specialists: current team member Talisa Wibmer and two new hires at Emerald Heights, Katharine Manter and Tanner Bostian. Manter earned her bache- lor’s degree in physical education with a kine- siology concentration followed by a master’s degree in clinical exercise physiology. Watermark Retirement Communities has appoint- ed Rene Sanz, Jr., a senior living industry veteran, as executive director at The Watermark at Coral Ga- bles, a new luxury senior
living community set to open in Florida in February. Sanz brings years of experience in both hospitality and senior living to lead The Watermark at Coral Gables through its open- ing and beyond. Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Sanz migrated with his family to New York City when he was 19 and then moved to Miami Beach a few years later. There, he got his start in hospitality working as a hotel por- ter. After six years working in hotels, he made the transition to senior living as community liaison for an assisted living community in Miami. This change sparked a newfound passion for senior living. He soon became ex- ecutive director at a new assisted living com- munity in Miami-Dade County, then joined Brookdale Senior Living as an executive direc- tor.
