SLEEP
sleep [sleep] - noun 1. to take the rest afforded by a suspension of voluntary bodily functions and the natural suspension, complete or partial, of consciousness; cease being awake.
Sleep is the state of natural rest. It is characterized by a reduction in voluntary body movement, decreased reaction to external stimuli, an increased rate of cell growth and decreased metabolism. Sleep is necessary for life. Humans can live 14 to 21 days without sleep, however, after that, death is assured.
In order to maintain mental alertness, humans require 6 to 10 hours of sleep per day. Any less results in “sleep debt”, which can result in “micro-sleeps” lasting seconds to several minutes. Micro-sleeps are dangerous result of fatigue.
During sleep the human body rests, repairs itself and rebuilds the immune system.
Micro-Sleeps A micro-sleep is a brief, unintended episode of sleep which may last for a fraction of a second or up to thirty seconds. They can be associated with blank stares, head snapping and prolonged eye closure. It often occurs as a result of sleep deprivation, mental fatigue, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or hypersomnia, and can occur at any time, typically without warning.
Micro-sleeps seem to occur at certain times when the body is pre-programmed to sleep, like pre-dawn, mid-afternoon and late evening. These can be extremely dangerous when they occur during situations which demand continual alertness, such as driving a motor vehicle, flying an aircraft or working with heavy machinery. People who experience large temperature swings, excessive noise, vibration and/or bright lighting, often experience micro-sleep episodes due, in part, to fatigue.
Lack of Sleep
Lack of sleep may be from the lack of time to sleep OR the inability to sleep. A “lack of time” is merely a lack of priority. The inability to sleep may be due to: a) physiological factors- headache, illness, pain b) physical- too hot, too cold, dog barking, traffic c) stress- worry, subconscious working overtime d) disruption of circadian rhythm- shift work, change of sleep habits, jet lag
