teacher training Food – a fact of life (FFL) is an educational programme that aims to communicate up-to-date, evidence- based messages around food to all those involved in education. The website provides free resources for teaching children and young people aged three to 16 years about cooking, healthy eating and where food comes from. FFL is managed by the British Nutrition Foundation, in partnership with the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, and has been developed by former teachers and nutrition experts. Resources include presentations, worksheets, activities and videos, as well as guidance on breakfast clubs, healthy lunchboxes and developing a whole- school healthy-eating policy. FFL also offers free and paid-for training – such as workshops, webinars and online courses for teachers – on topics including food spoilage, hygiene and safety, and the functional properties of food, as well as sensory science and good practice to support food and nutrition education. foodafactoflife.org.uk ‘I have been teaching “food” for 10 years, but feel it is an ever-evolving subject and think it’s extremely important to regularly take part in training to stay up to date with changes to the curriculum. I am currently in my first year of teaching the new GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition specification after returning from maternity leave, so I am always looking for ways to improve my teaching and extend my knowledge. Healthy tuck shops FREE resource


Pupils Profit enterprise initiatives engage a whole year group, usually at KS2, in the set up and operation of a healthy tuck shop. Initiatives are suitable for a class of 30 to take on and run for a whole year, or for multiple teams to compete against each other with each running the shop for one term. Pupilsprofit.com supports the planning, set up and operation of the shop, with evaluations and first-hand research to enable pupils to assess and record their successes, the problems they encountered and how they’ve overcome them. The tuck shop range of healthy snacks and drinks are within the Children’s Food Trust guidelines, affordably priced and are delivered directly to your school. Pupils will have the chance to experience all aspects of running a tuck shop, from sales and customer service to number-crunching in the buying and finance departments. Teamwork, healthy eating, managing budgets, managing risk, developing resilience and understanding career choices can all be linked to PHSE elements of the curriculum. pupilsprofit.com ‘The Healthy Tuck Shop has been a massive success story at our school. We had tried numerous initiatives to encourage children to eat healthy snacks – and nothing has been as successful as this! The shop is always busy and the snacks are reasonably priced, which also allows us to make a profit so that we can keep ordering more stock. The people at Pupils Profit have been fantastic. Even before we invested in the enterprise scheme, they were happy to share ideas and information. Communication is excellent, and the company sends regular emails informing the children of best-before dates, product prices and upcoming offers. This has been extremely useful for the children when deciding how many units to order.
