The mantra ‘you are what you eat’ is particularly true for children, who need energy and nutritional food to grow healthily. Emma Griffin selects products and resources that will help your pupils make informed choices around what they consume
HEALTHY EATING Educational card games
Developed by a qualified nutritionist, Freddie and the Food Troopers is a set of educational card games that support children in learning about health and nutrition through play. Three different packs cover food-related topics such as how certain foods are grown or produced, the different food groups, how a balanced diet works, calorie content and nutrient breakdown. The packs are a fun, colourful and engaging resource, aimed at opening up conversations about health and nutrition that can support the teaching of PHSE and help children make confident and healthy food choices.
edgames.co.uk ‘As a Year 6 teacher, I’m always looking for new and exciting ways to deliver information to my pupils, and Freddie and the Food Troopers certainly delivered. I bought the Food Fighters pack with my own funds. They have colourful and humorous pictures of a wide variety of foods with alliterative names, which I have incorporated into many activities. We’ve used them in maths and science, where we discussed how each card would fit into the main food groups, and compared the amount of carbohydrates using the ‘Top Trump’ cards. We also had fun investigating the true/ false statements. The cards broadened the children’s understanding of leading a healthy lifestyle, and also reinforced mathematical concepts. They are good value for money and I would highly recommend them.’ Marie Collett, Year 6 teacher, St Mary’s C of E School, Truro, Cornwall

Based in London, nutritionBAND is a global educational awareness campaign, which is introducing new ways to identify our nutritional and lifestyle requirements. Children and teenagers are often susceptible to influence from their peers about unhealthy eating trends, so understanding how food choices can impact on their emotional, physical and mental wellbeing can empower them to take control of their own nutrition and health. NutritionBAND’s brightly coloured wristbands are
designed to easily identify and clarify specialist dietary requirements, helping children choose suitable foods – and caterers understand what to serve them. Made from high-quality silicone, the wristbands are durable, eco-friendly, 100% food-grade recyclable, hypoallergenic and biodegradable. They are also safe and comfortable to wear during activities and sports, and are available in a range of sizes. As an ethical product, each wristband sold raises money for different charities and causes, including PETA, Friends of the Earth, Alzheimer’s Society, Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation. NutritionBAND is happy to discuss possible partnerships with schools and their catering providers, and can also deliver school workshops.
