LANCASTER UNIVERSITY AN ENGAGING APPROACH
Lancaster University has worked with and supported more than 11,000 industry partners over the last decade.
It is work that has propelled economic growth in the county and wider region and helped develop new products, processes and services to the benefit of the economy.
Lancaster has built and nurtured close working relationships with large multi-nationals working in areas where it has proven research strength.
It is an impressive list that includes the likes of Amazon, BAE Systems, Barclays, the Eden Project, Fujitsu, Siemens and Westinghouse, as well as regional and national government departments such as GCHQ and the National Nuclear Laboratory, and a variety of international charities and NGOs.
However, Lancaster believes its greatest asset is its work with the SME community, which has helped in building skills and resilience, often leading to the enhancement and protection of the supply chain for larger- scale organisations.
Its support work with around 700 SMEs has helped inject almost £500m into the regional economy.
The university offers a range of support activities including consultancies, knowledge transfer partnerships, research project partnerships, funded studentships, funded impact accelerator projects to partner with researchers and a wide variety of business development programmes.
An independent report into these programmes found that for every pound of the £27.5m invested by European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) in recent projects, the beneficiaries received £18 of value. This was forecast to rise to £28 - or £770m value added.
Mark Rushforth, the university’s associate director of enterprise and innovation, says the strength of its work with SMEs is “the collaborative approach that is taken.”
The university continues to run various business support programmes aimed at organisations from start-ups to larger SMEs and has also created bespoke programmes for several large organisations.
Lancaster offers business co-location space for organisations operating in various sectors. This includes office space, as well as access to sector specific facilities such as laboratories and digital space.
The university is also set to benefit from a share of £118m funding to jumpstart knowledge exchange, translation and commercialisation.
And it has been allocated £1.4m from a pot of funding designed to support the best, brightest and most disruptive ideas emerging from research organisations across the UK.
He says: “It is not about us saying ‘this is cool stuff, this is what we can do for you’, it is very much working with them to understand their needs and challenges and offering something that is bespoke to help them get where they need to be.
“The key thing for us is the impact that our research can have,” he adds.
The university’s management school has also played a key role in developing peer networking.
