EDGE HILL UNIVERSITY
MAKING THE RIGHT IMPACT
‘Impact’ is the word that continually comes to the fore when discussing Edge Hill University’s impressive work with businesses.
The university is committed to using its world-leading research to make a real difference. Professor Simon Bolton, director of its highly acclaimed SME Productivity and Innovation Centre (PIC), spells it out. He says: “It is fine generating knowledge, but does it have impact?”
The centre works directly with businesses to improve their skills, productivity and technology and has certainly had that impact in Lancashire over the last four years.
During that time it has engaged with 800 businesses, predominantly in Lancashire, and supported hundreds of individuals on their leadership journeys and built up key strategic partnerships along the way.
The team of business experts from the PIC has successfully delivered its acclaimed scale-up programme to more than 160 SMEs since 2018.
On average, those SMEs have experienced growth of 29 per cent, contributing more than £47m to the economy and with more than 60 new products launched and over 220 new jobs created.
It is a programme that has been so successful in Lancashire it is now being deliver in the neighbouring Liverpool City Region, again with strong results.
Prof Bolton explains how the centre supports businesses in getting to the next level: “Using data-driven innovation methods, we have worked with each business to assess their opportunities and address their challenges in developing a comprehensive scale-up strategy.”
Its team is also on hand to provide further support to help them maximise their growth potential.
The centre has also worked with more than 120 companies, helping them adopt technologies to improve productivity.
Professor George Talbot, pro vice-chancellor with responsibility for research, says knowledge exchange is fundamental to Edge Hill’s work. The university has worked to strengthen its research work and to produce data that can have that impact it seeks.

The accolade followed a bumper year of awards, which saw the institution crowned University of the Year in the Educate North Awards 2020/21 for its continued commitment to delivering an exceptional student experience.
Its campus on the outskirts of Ormskirk continues to grow and over the last 12 months a suite of computer science-related engineering programmes has been introduced to complement work in biotechnology, robotics and automation.
Work in this field has been strengthened with a £220,000 funding award from the Office for Students to support the growth of STEM subject work. This investment in biosciences facilities will put Edge Hill at the forefront of biology and biomedical research.
The university also now offers a full suite of healthcare education with the addition of the new medical school, which has been training much-needed additional doctors for the North West since 2020.

He points to the work of Professor Kim Cassidy. The Professor of Services Marketing’s recent research and insights have shaped two landmark reports on the future of our town centres and high streets.
And they have resulted in significant changes in how government funds and supports their regeneration.
Edge Hill’s impact is being noticed. It was named Modern University of the Year in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022.
