36 BUILT ENVIRONMENT

The speakers at the conference IT’S STILL GREEN FOR GO

Despite the government walking back some of the UK’s net zero targets the green agenda is not going away, conference delegates were told.

And the loud message from business leaders at the event was that they remain committed to continuing with their carbon reducing and energy saving plans, whatever comes out of Westminster.

Experts representing a wide range of the residential property sector spoke of the need for an end to short-term uncertainty as they look to deliver their development plans for Lancashire.

The “massive opportunity” that exists in retrofitting homes in the county as part of the drive towards net zero was also highlighted.

Andrew Atkinson, managing director of Fairhaven Housing Association, which specialises in the retirement housing sector, said: “There is no point listening to the short-term, the whole agenda could change in the next nine to 12 months.

“We are passionate about embedding sustainable technologies within the new properties that we want to build and we are passionate about the biodiversity we can deliver on site. A lot of what we do is not just about bricks and mortar it is about the environment we create around it.”

Sandy Livingstone is executive director, property, at housing association Onward Homes which is anchored in Lancashire. It owns 6,000 properties in the county and has a £100m regeneration project coming forward in Preston that will deliver 800 new homes in the city centre, which Sandy says is “very much linked to economic growth”.

He told the conference: “Effectively we take a longer term view. Regardless of what government said last week our plans don’t change. We are not being deflected by short term instability. We’ve already scaled up. We need more affordable housing in the country and the county to support economic growth.

“If you can’t house the people you can’t grow the economy. It’s like
