GOLD-STANDARD B&FC IS PRIDE OF COUNTY

Blackpool & The Fylde College (B&FC) is proud to have been named the only higher education provider in Lancashire to receive the highest award for teaching standards and student experience.

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold is awarded by higher education regulatory body the Office for Students and indicates the student experience and outcomes on our undergraduate courses, including higher and degree apprenticeships, are typically outstanding.

The award came following detailed submissions from the college and students, with student experience and outcomes both assessed individually.

Both were rated as Gold standard, giving us an overall rating of Gold – currently one of only three further education colleges in England to receive the gold across all three out of a total of 228 higher education providers.

It is a significant feat due to the illustrious nature of some of the education institutions included, but also an accurate reflection of the high standards we operate across our five campuses and four specialist centres.

A vital part of the success of our teaching is down to our extensive partnerships with more than 1,800 local, national and international employers.

Collaborative

Collaborations with organisations like Vodafone, Blackpool Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust, BAE Systems and many others have played a significant role in ensuring that degree and apprenticeship provision delivered at B&FC remains relevant and cutting edge. And we’re always looking for more organisations to partner with so we can continue to push boundaries.

Our partnership work with businesses involves co-creating course content to ensure our students and apprentices develop the critical knowledge, skills and behaviours that

B&FC principal Alun Francis OBE believes the TEF Gold award is an even greater achievement due to the geographical nature of the college and the diverse make-up of our students and apprentices.

are highly sought-after by employers so that we can help fill the skills gaps in regional and national economies.

We also employ industry-expert teaching staff who regularly update their own skills and knowledge through spending upto five days a year working in their sectors.

Our Gold achievement is even more remarkable given that this is not the first time the college has been awarded TEF Gold, originally achieving this in 2017 before a new framework was developed.

Blackpool & The Fylde College has indefinite foundation degree and time-limited degree awarding powers, as well as offering degree courses accredited by Lancaster University to over 2,500 undergraduates and higher and degree apprentices.

and degree apprenticeships and we operate over a broad church, with students coming from a mix of backgrounds. They come to us straight from further education at age 18, to students coming back into education later in life, those studying alongside employment and others who may be the first in their family to go on to higher education.

A student-centred approach, including wraparound support, and smaller class sizes ensure everyone succeeds in their course and progresses to highly skilled employment through a bespoke offering that caters for their needs.

What also sets B&FC apart is the flexible approach towards degree-level qualifications.

Appreciating that not all students can commit to a three-year programme from the outset, we offer the option of taking degree- level study often one year at a time with students being able to sign up for one-year programmes like Higher National Certificates and Certificates of Higher Education initially before moving on to further study.

This flexible approach benefits employers, who can upskill or reskill existing employees with a widely recognised qualification in less than a year. A large proportion of employers from across Lancashire are taking advantage of this to boost their businesses.

B&FC is also developing a number of Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), which are designed by businesses and employers.

It is also the lead college of the new Lancashire and Cumbria Institute of Technology, created to deliver a highly skilled workforce for the region.

With such strong links to the business community, our TEF Gold is a success to be celebrated across the county.
