WHY I SERVE F

orty-three individuals volunteer their time and talents as members of one of the five boards of directors overseeing Landis Communities and its affiliates. Tis column features a member of one of the boards and lists those who serve with the highlighted individual.

Tell me a little about yourself…

I grew up in Manor Township, Lancaster County. When I married my husband, Glenn C. Hershey, he brought me to “Amish Country” and the historic Hershey farm where his ancestors have lived for 220 years. I enjoy the farm and have been very content here. When our four kids were grown, I worked at Lancaster Mennonite School for 10 years as a tutor for special needs students. I also established a vacation rental on our property. I heard many stories from the people who stayed here! We now have 15 grandkids and six great- grandchildren that keep us busy.

When did you first hear of Welsh Mountain Home (WMH) and Landis Communities?

More than 40 years ago, the Hershey Mennonite Church helped with things like cleaning, repairs and programs at Welsh Mountain Home. We would often participate in these efforts and felt a sense of ownership for the work of WMH. My parents were residents at Landis Homes so I have a connection there as well.

How did you come to join the Board?

As members of a church in the Groffdale District, we have a representative on the board. Seven years ago, the bishop asked if I would be willing to serve in this way. I felt called to say yes because I believe in the mission and I had already been connected. I am inspired when WMH provides a home for someone who doesn’t have a home.

How has your role with WMH affected your life?

Serving on the Board has opened my eyes to the needs of those around me. I have been particularly

Cultivating Life, Together

touched by the way Mona Frey, Executive Director, tells the real life stories of residents and how they are loved and cared for, especially at the end of life.

What dreams do you have for the organization?

We are experiencing a dream come true right now with the renovations and addition of more bathrooms! Tis community is in such a unique setting. A new walkway, and more rooms planned with the expansion, will provide a wonderful home for residents in the future.

Why do you serve on the Board of WMH?

My heart goes out to people in need and I believe the Lord wants us to help care for others. I see Welsh Mountain Home as a place that perseveres in being salt and light for the residents who live there.
