As warm weather arrives, the sounds of summer bring nostalgic memories. It’s easy to reminisce about relaxing days by the water, but we often forget how important it is to learn to swim.
B
rad Brunner, Swimming Pool Specialist at Landis Homes, thought swim lessons should be offered to residents and team members for their children and grandchildren. “Te idea started about two years ago,” remembers Brad. “I would come in and share my experiences with fellow swimmers and give tips here and there. I was asked by residents if we would offer lessons. I usually responded, ‘let me look into it and I will get back to you.’”
After speaking with his supervisor and getting certified to take his Water Safety Instructor course through the Red Cross, classes began in May 2023. “We decided to offer swim lessons to residents and team members and their families at an affordable rate. Swim lessons can be really expensive – especially private lessons, and we wanted to offer a program that was very affordable.”

Lives, Together
Emma Myers, Joseph Lefever, and Charlotte Machowski learn jumping techniques with Brad Brunner.
Feedback and interest has been very positive. Every group class has been filled to capacity, and multiple individuals registered for private lessons.
Dave and Shari Lefever, residents at Landis Homes, expressed their gratitude for Brad and his affordable and fun swimming lessons. “Tree of our grandchildren took swim lessons with Brad. What progress they made! One was petrified of the water and Brad was so good with him.”
Megan Kurtz, a team member at Landis Homes, chimes in, “My girls love attending swim lessons and look forward to every session! Brad does a wonderful job at giving each child individual time and attention. It is amazing to see the growth in both my girls’ swimming abilities in such a short time!”
On swimming lesson day, Charlotte Machowski, 4-year-old swim lesson participant and daughter of team member Lauren Machowski, squeals in excitement, “I love it, I love it, I love it!”
Brad’s goal is to offer his affordable swim lessons to the community. “At Landis Homes, we serve others. We serve our residents, fellow team members, and also our community. By offering swim lessons that are affordable for everyone, we will not only potentially save someone’s life, but also enhance the quality of their life.”
