Many residents of Landis Homes rely on Symbria Rehab for in-patient physical, occupational, and speech therapy. However, those who need mobility assistance are often not able to get from their place of residence to the Symbria offices on east campus. That’s when dedicated volunteers, Phil Keely and Clair Kreider, are called to assist.

hil and Clair are not just wheelchair escorts – they are compassionate friends who truly care about the individuals they bring to and

from appointments. Tey are seeking to better the lives of those they serve.

Phil knows from personal experience the impact that can be made by a volunteer. “I relocated to Landis Homes during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he says. “I was undergoing therapy at Symbria Rehab so my wife and I decided it was time to move in. Tat’s how I met Clair, who was already volunteering.” Clair took Phil around to different places to explore and experience his new surroundings. As they walked and talked, Clair also shared about his experience working as a volunteer.

But it was Erica, a member of the Symbria Rehab team, who asked Phil if he would be interested in joining Clair and volunteering. “I had always wanted to volunteer after I retired, and help people in any way I could,” said Phil. Tis gentle push convinced Phil to join Clair in becoming the unofficial wheelchair escorts with Symbria Rehab.

opportunities to meet some fantastic people,” Clair says. “I enjoy learning about their way of life. Sometimes you learn about what they’ve done and find connections. It’s just a great experience.”

Te men also take this time to brighten the residents’ moods. When Erica realized the challenge some residents and staff faced telling them apart, she crafted shirts for Phil and Clair, featuring their names on the front and a playful phrase, "Isn't that humerus?" on the back. Tis creative solution not only solved the identification dilemma but also added some fun to their service. Phil says, “All residents are valuable. I love to make their day, talk to them, and make them laugh. It’s what I enjoy.”

Phil, Erica, and Clair bring a healthy dose of laughter and companionship to the residents they serve.

As Phil and Clair continue their volunteer work, they encourage others to explore similar opportunities. “Volunteering is not just about providing a service.

It helps you learn people’s stories and create meaningful connections,” Clair says.

Phil and Clair exemplify the compassion and community that thrive within Landis Homes and Symbria Rehab. Teir dedication to enhancing the lives of residents goes beyond the physical act of volunteering—it creates lasting friendships and provides a positive experience for residents during their rehabilitation journey.
