Cultivating
Community, Together
frequently utilizes the Amtrack train and Red Rose Transit buses. “I put my bike on the front of the bus and ride to Columbia, bike the Northwest River Trail into Marietta, meet friends to socialize and have lunch, then take the bus back home,” Nancy said.
Nancy appreciates the buses because they are on time and reliable. “Te drivers and the patrons are so friendly!” she said.
But walking and public transportation aren’t the only ways that Nancy gets around. As a member of the Lancaster Downtowners, a group for seniors who want to age in place, she is able to get rides from other members and her community at Steeple View Lofts is also there for her.
“I have a network of friends here,” Nancy said. “Some people go to the store at the same time each week, so I can catch a ride with them without inconveniencing those who have a routine. Additionally, many of my friends enjoy the same activities I do, so we go together.” Nancy returns the favor by helping her friends. She walks their dogs, waters their plants or bakes for them.
“I love the convenience and the walkability of Lancaster.
It’s even more convenient to live here than I was hoping.”
Tanks to the walkability of Lancaster City, Nancy spends lots of time downtown which means more support for local businesses and more opportunities to connect with the community. She is saving money by eliminating car payments and the cost of gas, insurance, maintenance and repairs and she has reduced her own carbon footprint. “Being car-free is good for the community and quality of life,” she said.
Walking and taking public transportation are part of the beauty and charm of Steeple View Lofts and Lancaster City as a whole. Te options for transportation add to the richness of holistic wellness and help residents immerse themselves in the vibrancy and diversity of the community.
