WHY I SERVE F
John Lines, Vice Chair of the Landis Communities Board of Directors
Tell me a little about yourself… I’m a Brownstown native, raised not far from Landis Homes. After Conestoga Valley High School, I headed to Temple University for journalism and joined the marching band - where I met my wife, Sue. We now live in West Lampeter and have two grown
children. My career kicked off with seven years at the Intelligencer Journal, and I served next as a township supervisor and on non-profit boards like the Lancaster City Alliance. I joined the communications team at Lancaster General Hospital in 1996 and now serve as Senior Director of Regional Communications for Penn Medicine, managing communications at four of our hospitals.
When did you first hear of Landis Communities? When Landis Communities formed, Larry Zook contacted LGH’s leadership to identify a board candidate. Since our organizations pursue similar missions and I’d just finished my MBA, it was excellent timing. At our first meeting, Larry outlined a vision for a network of integrated aging services. Serving here has been a rewarding way to positively impact others.
When did you realize you wanted to be a part of the organization? During my first tour of Landis Homes. Landis’ reputation was well-known, but meeting the team and seeing the difference they make in the lives of others made that mission real. Watching the team over the past decade, particularly through the COVID pandemic, also deepened my perspective on board service.
What were your first impressions when you joined the board? Te learning curve was

steep and remains so, even after nearly 13 years on the board. Like healthcare, senior living is extremely complex, heavily regulated, and faces systemic challenges such as staffing, affordability, and navigating Medicare/Medicaid complexities. Landis is blessed to have compassionate employees, a talented leadership team, and visionary volunteer boards – all dedicated to delivering high-quality care to residents throughout Landis Communities’ broad array of settings and services.
How has your role with Landis Communities affected your life? Enabling my mother to stay in the home she loved was a priority, and we were so thankful Landis at Home provided the support to make it happen. As her health declined, Landis Homes was there to welcome her with a level of care and attention we will never forget. As a board member, their grace toward her—and our whole family—meant the world to me.
What do you want others to know about Landis Communities? Te Landis Communities Board, and those serving on its affiliate boards, understand that the future of senior care requires constant adaptation. Whether navigating demographic shifts or emerging technologies, our leadership remains proactive.
Why do you serve on the Board of Landis Communities? I serve to help Landis navigate today’s challenges while ensuring its mission endures for the next generation. My greatest reward is seeing residents live in peace, dignity, and comfort—knowing I played a part in that.
