GLEN MOFFETT
WHY I SERVE F
orty-two individuals volunteer their time and talents as members of one of the five boards of directors overseeing Landis Communities and its affiliates. Tis column features a member of one of the boards and lists those who serve with the highlighted individual.
Please share a little about yourself… I’m not originally from Pennsylvania. I grew up in New Jersey and lived in California and West Virginia before moving to Lancaster. My wife, Linda, and I are both retired. She was a writer and editor and I served over 40 years as an attorney for health systems. We have three grown children – two girls and a boy – and five grandkids. We loved having the entire family with us this summer in Maine.
Tell me about when you first heard of Landis Homes… My first introduction to Landis Homes was more than 25 years ago. At that time, we attended Mountville Mennonite Church and several people from church lived at Landis Homes. I knew of the great reputation but being on campus and learning of the history of the founders who wanted to create a Godly community for retired missionaries and pastors, helped me to admire the organization even more.
When and why did you decide to join the Board of Directors? In 2007, Larry Zook reached out to me and asked if I would serve on the Landis Homes Board. My father’s example was the inspiration for my decision. He had volunteered on many boards of faith-based organizations because he felt he could use his skills and experience to bless others through organizations that are doing good work.
What was the first thing you noticed? I was impressed with the quality of the board and their thoughtful governance. We had many strategic discussions regarding how to provide a variety of housing and services to older adults on and off the Landis Homes campus. Tis led to the development of the South Campus, the affiliation with Welsh Mountain Home, the development of Mountain View Terrace and Steeple View Lofts, and the creation of Landis Communities, among other initiatives.
Enriching Lives, Together
Glen Moffett is the newly elected chair of the Landis Homes Board of Directors. He
continues to serve on the Landis Communities Board.
How has your role with Landis affected your life? I now have a greater appreciation for seniors and their need for services that help them to age well. Landis provides quality care and a place to live in community. I see what a blessing it is and am grateful I can be part of this mission.
What do you want others to know about Landis Homes? I continue to be amazed and impressed by the residents of Landis Homes. It is a vibrant community with interesting people who enjoy participating in Pathways Institute of Lifelong Learning® classes, tending flowers and vegetables in their gardens, and standing up for things they believe in, like racial justice. And the quality reputation remains intact. It is nice when friends mention Landis with high regard.
Why have you taken on the role of Chair of the Landis Homes Board? I consider it a privilege to serve as a board member, first at Landis Homes, then for Landis Communities and now as the Chair of the Landis Homes Board. It allows me to live out my faith and honor God by using my lifetime of skills and experiences to help others.
