Doris Yoder has lived in the same house since she was two years old, in the countryside near Elizabethtown, PA. As the oldest of four, she was firmly in the bubble of Baby Boomers that came following World War II. Doris loved school as a child saying, “Having had several surgeries as a preschooler I decided early that I wanted to be nurse who would be kind to children and treat them with dignity.

A

fter graduating from Lancaster General School of Nursing, I completed my BSN degree at Goshen College. After 10 years as a public health nurse I got my MSN as a Family

Nurse Practitioner from UPenn.” She has enjoyed her career in family practice, college health, and now a continence care consultant. She notes, “I have come full circle as I currently practice at the facility where I started as a nurse's aide in the 1960s.”

Doris remembers talking with her sister, who is also a nurse, about the realities of caring for their parents as they aged. She noted, “How can people who are not health professionals deal with Medicare, decision making and the other challenges during these times? It's quite a challenge even for us who knew the system quite well!"

A few years ago, Doris attended a presentation on Friends LifeCare at Stewardship University, hosted by Everence. Following that, she became a member in 2019. She felt it was important to have secured care coordination before she ever needed it. “I do not have children or nieces or nephews. If I get to a point in life when I need health related services, it could be invaluable to have someone up to date in the health care arena to provide information and guidance,” she said.

While she has not needed any of these services yet, Doris is glad to have met Mary Beck, her Care Coordinator from Friends LifeCare. She knows that if and when the services are needed, she will be able to contact her Care Coordinator. Te Friends LifeCare and Landis Communities goal of peace of mind in knowing where care will come from, how it will be arranged, and how it will be paid for if and when members' health changes, certainly is helping Doris as she enjoys her independence.
