FEATURES

When disaster strikes, sometimes a hug is all that will suffice. But, because it’s impossible to send a hug overseas, the Landis Homes Comfort Knotters have partnered with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) to find a new way to spread warmth and coziness to those in need.

L

andis Homes residents Leon and Elaine Good have led the Landis Homes Comfort Knotters group since 2011, several years prior

to becoming residents. Te group supplies MCC with 250-300 comforters a year, which are then distributed around the world for international relief efforts.

Tese countries include Burkina Faso, Canada, Ecuador, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Ukraine, and Zambia.

Comfort Knotters meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month to knot comforters. Two members of the group prepare for the knotting session, but the rest of the work is all done in the residences of group members. Donated or purchased fabric for the tops and backs are used and purchased polyester batting is used for the middle layer of the comforters. Te group is comprised of 20 residents and four attendees from off campus.

“Te importance of this ministry cannot be overstated!” Elaine said. “Needy people are all over the world. War, poverty, and weather disasters are robbing people of the ability to take care of themselves – hence the need for material resources.”

Join the Landis Homes Comfort Knotters in sending a “hug” to those who truly need one.
