CHUCK & LOURENE’S STORY A JOURNEY THROUGH CARE
(Charles) Chuck and Lourene were married 60 years and lived a full, joyful life together. Lourene was a Registered Nurse - BSN at Boston College and a hospice nurse. Chuck was an executive in the non-profit field for many years before they both retired. In her mid-50s, Lourene was diagnosed with a rare type of brain tumor. Her long-term prognosis was not encouraging.
L
ourene surprised them! She continued nursing, reading, caring for others including their four sons, and living life. However, she did experience some health changes.
“Te treatment for the tumor affected her frontal lobe which then affected her memory and some of her processing,” Chuck shared.
“We were Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning® instructors and that’s how we became familiar with Landis Homes. Once we moved in, Lourene’s health began declining further and we needed the assistance of Landis at Home. Te caregivers at Landis at Home became like family. Tey gave Lourene care to complement what I could give, giving us another five years of aging in place. I don’t think anyone understands the full, comprehensive services of Landis at Home until they experience the need for them. Te care they gave wasn’t a service, it was a ministry.”
Michele Sipel, Director of InHome Services, said, “Being able to support Lourene and Chuck’s desire to stay together and age in place as long as possible was an honor. Starting with just a little assistance and then increasing as Lourene’s needs changed, helped give Chuck respite and assistance with needed tasks. Te Landis at Home team formed relationships with both Lourene and Chuck. Tey developed routines for care that helped Lourene know what to expect so she could participate to her fullest capacity for as long as possible. It was a pleasure for our team to work beside Chuck, who was a loving and dedicated caregiver, to support Lourene and help meet her needs.”
