and talents as members of one of the five boards of directors overseeing Landis Communities and its affiliates. Tis column features a member of one of the boards and lists those who serve with the highlighted individual.
Tell me a little about yourself…
I’m originally from Northern Illinois. I met
my husband, Chuck, in high school. We have been married for 44 years and have two grown daughters. Our careers have largely been focused on economic development and social impact – in the US and internationally. It was my work with MEDA that brought us to Lancaster. I was then asked to help form ASSETS, a local nonprofit offering training and resources to help build successful businesses. We did move to Atlanta for a time, but we wanted to come back to Lancaster. Now I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
When did you first hear of Landis Communities? We attend East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church. Larry Zook, several team members, and residents from throughout Landis Communities also attend there. I began to learn more about Landis Communities while serving on a committee with Larry and a resident.
What was going on in your life at the time? I am the founding Board Chair of Chestnut Housing, a nonprofit providing quality affordable rental housing to those in Lancaster city experiencing homelessness. I believe affordable housing is fundamental to the wellbeing of all persons.
When did you realize you wanted to be a part of the organization? Larry Zook asked me if I would join the Board of Landis Quality Living (LQL). I saw a connection between the work of
LQL and Chestnut Housing and wanted to learn more.
What did you experience as a new Board Member? I was immediately exposed to a broader and very intentional way of approaching affordable and middle market housing for older adults. With a different target market and funding streams than I have worked with, I am coming to understand a bigger picture of an issue I’ve been part of for a long time. Te vision and values of LQL are important to me and the Board is a committed and very qualified group of people.
What dreams do you have for the organization? Tere is great potential to do more to provide affordable housing in the Lancaster area. I look forward to building on what we have done and what we have learned to identify and bring new projects to completion.
What do you want others to know about LQL?
I appreciate the time taken to sift through potential opportunities for lower and middle income housing as well as to evaluate potential partners. Careful thought is also given to the support of residents over the long term.
Why do you serve on the Board of Landis Quality Living? I love volunteering – it provides purpose and is life-giving. Serving on the Board of LQL is particularly rewarding because I can use my knowledge and skill set to give back to the community. My passions and experience fit well with the vision and values of LQL.
