STEPS of FAITH A
s a child, Earl lived with his family in the Hudson Valley of New York. At 14 years old, after his family separated, he was kicked out of the house and found himself on his own. Earl secured a job on a farm owned by a Jewish family, where he not only worked for food and shelter but also immersed himself in the Jewish way of life. “One thing that sticks with me,” Earl recalls, “is hearing the Old Testament read in the original language, from a scroll.” Tese early years laid the foundation for Earl’s faith.
From there he went on to work at a freight company. One day he found a box that no one knew what to do with, so he put it under his desk and forgot about it. Months later, when the company came looking for it, Earl discovered it was filled with 20 pounds of uncut diamonds, worth over $2 million. Despite the temptation, Earl turned in the diamonds to their rightful owner. “Te name Earl Mosier meant something honest now,” he says.
Troughout his life, Earl has also had special connections with animals. From the dog he adopted at the ASPCA to a wild mustang that took a liking to him, animals seem to recognize Earl’s gentle spirit. “Everything, all things, are in the hand of God,” Earl believes, and this extends to his bond with animals.
In 1984, Earl suffered a seizure leading to the discovery of a brain tumor. “I had an 84% chance of not waking up and a 95% chance of waking up a vegetable,” Earl shares. But against all odds, Earl not only survived the surgery but woke up joking with the nurses. “Praise God, I’m alive,” he says, reflecting on the six weeks he spent in the hospital learning to walk again. Earl’s survival story is nothing short of miraculous.
Forty years later, Earl finds joy in the community and activities offered at Landis Adult Day Services. “Te part I like best about coming here is that it puts me where there are people my age. It’s good to be around other people. I enjoy the staff, too. Tey’re very friendly, very helpful,” he says. Earl especially appreciates the NuStep machine, which he uses 2-3 times a day, and the puzzles that keep his mind sharp.
Earl’s life has been a journey filled with trials, adventures, miracles, and a deep, abiding faith. When asked which of the Landis Communities guiding values resonates with him, he selected Compassion. “Because of God’s compassion and His mercy, I go on each day.” It is this compassion, rooted in his faith, that has carried him through the challenges and joys of life, and it is what continues to inspire him every day.
