Katie Stalter, a Home Care Aide with Landis at Home, and Norman Shenk, one of her clients, share a bond that exemplifies the heart and soul of caregiving though Landis at Home. To Norman, Katie is not just a caregiver but a companion who respects his independence and shares in his daily life.

at Home, Together™

atie was inspired by her mother’s care and compassion, which she now brings to her work with clients. Her journey into caregiving began long before she became a Home Care Aide. As a young girl, she often accompanied her mother to work at Tel Hai Retirement

Community. Tose nights spent observing her mother, left a lasting impression on Katie. “My mother was my inspiration. She worked 35 years on the third shift, and she taught me, at a very young age, what it means to be a caregiver,” Katie reflects.

Norman has a deep love for gardening and has cultivated a garden that provides him with a variety of fresh produce. Tough Katie admits she’s “not much of an outdoor girl,” she has taken on the responsibility of ensuring that none of Norman’s hard work goes to waste. Together, they find creative ways to use the food that he grows, whether it’s tasting tomato sauce or making his beloved applesauce.

“One of the first things we did together was make applesauce—Norman loves his applesauce,” Katie says with a smile. Teir shared activities extend beyond the kitchen. After dinner, they engage in games of Rummikub, now part of their routine. “Norman is very competitive,” Katie laughs. “We finally found a game we both enjoy.”

Norman adds, "Katie serves me very well. She prepares menus and food for multiple days. I also enjoy the games. She helps me remember to take my medicines. Katie has been a blessing for me."

Katie believes that the flexibility and personalized care provided by Landis at Home sets them apart from other caregiving services. “I think we’re more flexible. Tat’s why we’re different,” she notes. “Most other places require clients to contract for three hours or more of daily care. We offer Landis Homes residents as little as 15 minutes per day.”

For Katie, caregiving is more than a job—it’s a calling, a way to honor the legacy of care her mother instilled in her. To Norman, Katie is more than just a caregiver—she is a trusted companion who helps him maintain his independence and enjoy the life he loves. Teir relationship is a testament to the profound impact that personalized care can have on both the caregiver and the client, creating a sense of home, comfort, and connection in each other’s lives.
