In an era where climate change is reshaping the urban landscape and infrastructure needs are at an all-time high, a groundbreaking initiative is set to redefine the industry: the brand-new Drainage Network Operative Apprenticeship program certified by two awarding Organisations, EUISA and Smart Awards and delivered by the UK national training specialist PQMS. Designed to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in water management and drainage systems, this program promises not only to fill a critical gap in the workforce but also equip the next generation with innovative skills and sustainable practices.
Why Drainage Matters More Than Ever
Flooding, water conservation, and urban development have become pressing concerns globally, whilst at a national level effluent release and maintaining waterways have mandated the need for new skills and blood coming into the water and drainage sector. Cities are expanding rapidly, often outpacing the typically Victorian designed network to support them.

Meanwhile, while new systems are installed, extreme weather events caused by climate change are putting unprecedented pressure on our current drainage systems.
“Drainage systems are the unsung heroes of our infrastructure,” says Bruce Taylor of the National Association of Drainage Contractors (NADC), a Drainage consultant and advisor for the apprenticeship program. “They ensure that cities stay operational during heavy rains, protect properties from water damage, and safeguard public health by managing wastewater effectively. Schemes such as the Thames Tideway and the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme are notable examples of pioneering investment in our sector.”
The Drainage Network Operative apprenticeship aims to bridge the skills gap by offering comprehensive training that combines basic drainage skills and supplements them with state-of-the-art technology in areas such as CCTV and Jetting. This apprenticeship program represents a significant leap forward in preparing operatives for the challenges ahead.
