IN THE NEWS
In the last issue the burning question in the South West was where was the Bristol Arena going to be located. Now we know that if there is an Arena, it will not be at Temple Island and will most likely be in Filton. Te Council have instead proposed a mixed-use development at Temple Island including a conference centre, housing, offices and shops. Reactions have been mixed and only time will tell whether or not it’s been the best decision.
Last time we reported that Bristol City Council had plans to alter the skyline of the city with tall towers. The latest on that is that a pressure group, Bristol Campaign Against Tower Blocks, are calling for a referendum on the issue. Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees has previously expressed support for tall buildings so it will be interesting to see how this story develops.
Bristol has recently topped many polls for being a great place to live and the city is now one of the main financial hubs outside of London. In fact one fifth of employment in this sector is in the South West region. Bristol is now home to some of the biggest financial services including Lloyds, Metro Bank and Triodos.
In other news, the traffic chaos in Bristol is thought to have contributed to it being overtaken by Bath in a YouGov poll of the most popular cities in the South West. Bath topped the poll whilst Bristol came in at number 10.
Another issue affecting the South West is the scrapping of the Severn Bridge toll.
» Bristol North West MP Darren Jones has warned that scrapping the toll could result in traffic gridlock.
» The toll is due to be removed at the end of 2018 and it’s thought this will result in 16,000 extra car journeys every day; 8,000 in and 8,000 out.
» Conversely the Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns believes that removing the toll will drive the economies of the South West and South Wales together thus creating a prosperous new trading block.
» A transport hub to discuss the issue is being held Henbury and Brent Community Centre on 19th October.
