WINTER 2018 • SPOTLIGHT • 13

Whether replacing existing investment or taking control of privately owned groups, new investors are generally driven to increase scale and a highly fragmented holiday parks market is the perfect platform from which to do this. They are attracted by asset backed trading entities for which supply is constrained by restrictive planning policies, making them relatively secure investments.

Economic factors are supportive of the UK self-catering market and holiday parks in particular at present, with Sterling deprecation making holidaying abroad poor value, stimulating domestic tourism. Other contributing factors include concerns relating to security, airport fatigue and reduced confidence in travel companies, as well as an increased trend for multiple short-breaks rather

than the traditional summer holiday. Statistics compiled by Visit Britain suggest a mature domestic tourism market and the year to May 2018 has been positive, aligned to some favourable weather; trips are up 5%, nights are up 6% and spend is up 8%.

As well as stimulating domestic tourism, amongst other factors, Sterling deflation has served to encourage inbound tourism. Visit Britain statistics indicate that, after several years of growth since 2010, the number of visits grew 4% to a record 39.2 million in 2017 and the value of spending increased 9% to £24.5 billion. Visit Britain forecast continued growth in 2018 with a 4.4% increase in visits and a 7.1% increase in spending.
