“There are always limited editions where we try out new varieties and see how they are liked by our customers – for example, right now we have the FrischSchoggi with crispy and salty popcorn, perfected with crushed corn kernels in milk chocolate.”
Since 2012, Läderach has produced its own cocoa mass and now controls and cultivates the whole supply chain from cocoa plant to shop, starting with high quality cocoa beans sourced from carefully selected cocoa farmers in West Africa and Latin America. As a boutique chocolatier the company doesn’t aim to produce a particular volume of chocolate each year (those numbers are discretely kept private) and Johannes is keen to point out that the rate of production is directly linked to the ability to provide customers with the freshest products.
The firm has been eager to embrace digital technology, both to increase sales and broaden brand awareness. “Social media is key to effective consumer dialogue,” says Johannes. “We engage with a lot of our customers in this way and it is also a useful medium for us to innovate and test new product ideas. We see social media as a great way to listen to what the market is saying about us and our brand. It’s an invaluable market research tool and we therefore recognise that we need to integrate the online community into corporate communications in a sincere and authentic way.”
And although Läderach chocolates can be purchased on the internet, the opening of physical stores in London this year underlines Johannes’ belief that the future of retail is very firmly based on tangible shops.
He notes: “It’s obvious that the online channel complements our retail units and gives us greater regional reach and market presence, but the true experience of tasting fresh chocolate remains in the store. First inhaling the aroma of a chocolate and then biting into it is an unbeatable sensation.”

“ The move into the UK is partly a response to the fact that the country has the highest per capita chocolate consumption in Europe outside Switzerland and Germany”
