SOUTHSIDE STORY


Southside in Wandsworth is one of the largest shopping centres in London and is being reshaped to meet the changing needs of shoppers – a huge influx of new residents. We spoke to the woman in charge of the asset, Zoe Gilligan of Landsec.


“W


e have to take risks and try out new things if we want to be successful going forward. Anything’s possible if you have an open mind to new possibilities and ways of doing things.”


This feisty talk comes not from a fledgling tech sector apprentice as you might expect, but Zoe Gilligan, senior portfolio manager at Landsec. The former DTZ agent and ING Real Estate fund manager has a proven track record across the core property sectors, so knows a thing or two when it comes to trialling new concepts in a bid to navigate the current challenging conditions facing the UK’s retail market.


Currently responsible for the 600,000 sq ft Southside shopping centre in London’s Wandsworth, Gilligan believes in taking calculated risks when it comes to shaping the future. No more so than at Southside, where with the help of leasing agents, Colliers International, Landsec are well advanced with plans to repurpose a 80,000 sq ft Debenhams store which was previously one of the centre’s anchors.


Gilligan remains tight lipped about naming potential newcomers for the space but reports: “Landsec views the ability to repurpose the store as a huge opportunity for the centre”.


Strong retailers such as Waitrose, Decathlon and Uniqlo set Southside apart from many other suburban centres, and Oliver Bonas has recently tripled the size of its store in the centre. It now includes a full range of homewares, fashion
