Liverpool plans for mega cruise ships
L
iverpool hopes to welcome mega cruise ships as well as transatlantic ocean liners once a new cruise terminal is built. The city has approved plans for a new £50
million building to replace the current temporary structure, which will be capable of berthing ships of more than 4,000 passengers – more than twice the current handling capacity. The new plans have identified the former Princes Jetty as the site of the proposed facility. The jetty houses the current facility but the new building will span a much bigger part of the quayside. Work is due to start this year. Last year, the city welcomed more than 60 vessels carrying 120,000 passengers and crew. However, the current infrastructure only allows for ships capable of carrying fewer than 2,000 passengers. Fred Olsen and CMV are among the lines sailing from Liverpool. Cunard, whose iconic former headquarters is one of Liverpool’s Three Graces, ran scheduled voyages to New York until 1968 but now operates transatlantic voyages from Southampton. Angie Redhead, head of city assets at Liverpool City Council, said: “We know the demand to sail from Liverpool is there and ships these days are getting bigger and bigger. It’s about building a facility that can compete with Southampton.”

he follow up to the hugely successful film Mamma Mia! will once again put a lesser-
known European island in the spotlight this summer.
The original feel-good musical, featuring ABBA hits and starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, was filmed on Skopelos in the Greek islands – reached by ferry from Skiathos. This time round, Vis in Croatia is the setting for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the story of which is told in part in flashbacks. The village of Komiza to the west, Barjoska Bay and Stiniva beach all feature in the movie. During filming, the stars stayed in various villas and on board yachts around the island. The Great American West contracts Rocky Mountain International to oversee marketing efforts and manage overseas representation in each of the international markets. “There’s so much that can be said in a name, and we wanted the brand to convey the proper recognition and represent the region’s story,” said Mathias Jung, owner of Rocky Mountain International.

The 35 sq mile-island is the furthest of the Central Dalmatian Islands from the mainland and is reached by ferry in about two and half hours. Until 1989 it was a base for the Yugoslav army. Croatia’s far
more familiar destination, Dubrovnik, is already flying high with a starring role in the hugely popular TV series Game of Thrones. Among many locations open to the public in the city are Medieval Bokar Fortress, which features as King’s Landing, and Tresteno Arboretum, recognisable as

the Red Keep’s gardens. The British Channel Island of
Guernsey has meanwhile already seen indications of a tourism boost from the recent film The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which, like the Mamma Mia! sequel, stars Lily James. Based on the novel of the same name, it is set following the island’s occupation during the Second World War. Key tour operators reported a surge in bookings and searches, while the tourist board website saw a 130% increase in traffic in the five days following the film’s release. A museum about the occupation and a military underground hospital are among wartime historical visitor attractions. Tourists are also drawn by its coastal scenery and connections to Les Miserables writer Victor Hugo.
