week in the life Charlotte Alderslade Charlotte Alderslade A week in the life of WTM portfolio conference and seminar manager I

am in my 10th year at Reed Exhibitions and I have spent most of my time here on the events management side. Currently I work across the whole WTM portfolio. I have a particularly busy role; I’m always in meetings or on a conference call with our industry experts. For example, at WTM London I manage almost 100 sessions that include around 400 speakers and this year I have also got the International Travel & Tourism Awards, presented by WTM, to manage, so it is going to be a very busy year indeed.

Monday

It’s the last week of preparation before Arabian Travel Market and we are busy finalising the latest additions to the list of speakers and making sure they are happy and registered to attend. We are all still in the office and although our heads are mainly full of the event in Dubai, we are also at the beginning of the WTM London cycle, so we meet with some of the people who will be hosting sessions on stage and decide who they will approach to take part.

Tuesday

We really start to think about WTM London, where we plan to introduce a half-day programme for destinations to meet potential investors from across the board – not just hotel developers but from the hospitality industry in general. We are also well into preparation for the first International Travel & Tourism Awards that will take place during WTM London. These will be on the Tuesday night at Tobacco Dock, which will be a beautiful venue for the first event.

Wednesday

It is our final day in the office before we fly to Dubai. Fingers crossed we have done all we have to do before we head off, so we mostly switch our attention to WTM London. For the 2018 event, we are thinking about how we present content with a focus that has a regional context. More will be revealed during the next few months.

Thursday

We fly to Dubai and have a day’s rest that ends with a desert safari and dune bashing in a 4x4, which is a bit of a treat for us. It is good to be able to leave the cold wet UK for the 40℃ heat. In the evening, we have a team meal and enjoy the Dubai fountains.

Most looking forward to this year: The launch of our new International Travel & Tourism Awards at WTM London

Friday

It’s up at 6am and on site at 8am for a breakfast meeting and to check that all the work that should have been done overnight has been completed. The show doesn’t open for another two days, so in between finalising a few things, we continue working on WTM London.

Saturday

The onsite build-up continues but we also use the time to meet with some of the speakers and delegates with an eye towards the London event. I can’t give too much away, but we have talks with Facebook and Instagram about their involvement.

62 wtm insights summer 2018

It’s the first day of Arabian Travel Market and the main opening session sees representatives from Dubai Airports and Emirates on stage with the exciting Virgin Hyperloop One. It could one day mean that travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi will take only 12 minutes and it is a fittingly futuristic start to the show.
