Wine of the world With Italian food making such a mark in the


world’s favourite products, the country’s wine is equally important. The rolling hills between Pisa, Arezzo and Florence are popularly referred to as “the heart of Tuscany”. Its dense vineyards, chestnut forests, medieval villages and romantic castles make up the birthplace of Chianti; one of the world’s best red wines. The soft and velvety drink’s notes of violet, iris and vanilla can be paired with a traditional Tuscan vegetable dish named ribollita or other regional classics such as crostini and chicken liver pate or bruschetta with tomatoes.


While the British say “work to live, don’t live


to work”, the Italians would most definitely say “live to eat, don’t eat to live”; a mantra that’s almost irresistible.

• Between the end of October and the beginning of November, festivals and feasts celebrating The Novello (time of new wine) pop up all over Italy. These include the Festival of New Wine and Olive Oil in Vignanello; The Steam Train of New Wine in Lombardy; New Wine on the Streets in Orsago; Feast of the New Wine in Bardolino; and in Puglia’s Leverano, locals and visitors celebrate for three whole days.


• The International Alba White Truffle Fair will take place in the Piedmont region from October 6 until November 25, 2018. Visitors can see live cooking shows, explore exhibitions, browse markets and taste local wines.


• The Napoli Pizza Village festival runs every September in Naples to celebrate pizza the Neapolitan way. Plus, 40 of the city’s historic pizzerias will compete in the event’s World Pizza Championships.


• Every year, the International Artisan Gelato Exhibition brings round tables, international contests, demonstrations and technical seminars to Longarone for artisan ice-cream makers, traders and visitors alike. The dates for the next event are December 2-5, 2018.


• “Acetaie aperte” is an annual open house of the best vinegar makers in Moden, taking place on September 30 in 2018. The one-day event sees more than 30 producers of balsamic vinegar treat visitors to tours of their artisan factories.
