Chemistry Honors (Grades 6-12)
What is scientific literacy? Analyze the results of simple laboratory experiments, evaluate sources of error, synthesize information, and express it clearly in written lab reports. Cover topics equivalent to a full year of high school chemistry at the honors level. Study introductory chemistry concepts, chemical compositions and reactions, energy and bonding, states of matter, and advanced chemistry applications. During this course, students will:
Integrate multiple ideas in the problem-solving process and check results to make sure they are physically reasonable
Employ critical thinking and hypothesis-driven methods of scientific inquiry
Clearly explain qualitative chemical concepts and trends
Describe, explain, and model chemical and physical processes at the molecular level in order to explain macroscopic properties
CTD PATHWAY: This course challenges students with an aptitude for science. It is an excellent introduction to chemistry that includes animations and videos to help students better visualize chemistry concepts which promotes a richer understanding.
Psychology: Human Relationships and Technology (Grades 6-12)
Can technology both help and hurt relationships? Examine the connection between relationships and technology. Gain an understanding of how the world of social media has changed how we interact with each other and how we can become more disconnected than ever. Technology allows humans to multi-task—find out if you can be a “supertasker” with technology. Learn about the future of psychology and technology and examine what our lives and relationships may look like in the future. During this course, students will:
Assess multi-tasking and understand the “supertasker”
Apply evaluation skills examining research in brain imaging, research studies, and self-reflection
Understand technology addictions and how psychology is integrating treatment and technology
Examine the future of technology and new approaches to breaking technology addiction
CTD PATHWAY: This course is designed for students who want to examine their relationship and the relationships of others with technology. This is a great starting point for students interested in taking high-school-level psychology.
The History of Ancient Greece (Grades 7-10)
How do the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome reveal themselves to
us...how do we know so much about cultures from long ago? Explore the material remains of ancient Greece and Rome, focusing on the primary sources, both literary and physical, allowing you to formulate some understanding of these distant cultures. Research and explore the successes and failures of ancient Greece: the Minoans and Myceneans, the Dark Ages, the rise of Athens and the Persian Wars, Sparta and the Peloponnesian Wars, and Alexander the Great. During this course, students will:
Understand the historical and political forces which shaped change in ancient Greece
Know the major historical figures, geographical areas, and battles/ conflicts of ancient Greece
Analyze the differences between ancient Greek political systems and leaders
Become familiar with the character and values of Athens and Sparta
CTD PATHWAY: This course is designed for students with a passion for the rich history of the ancient world. The course prepares students for future coursework in ancient history or humanities courses.
