MINSEO is a ninth grader who has participated in Community Health and Medicine, Brain and Behavior, Introduction to Psychology, and Introduction to Biomedicine Honors courses at Center for Talent Development (CTD). Currently, Minseo wants to be a psychiatrist. She wants to “help people and be part of the change to eliminate the taboo of mental illness.” Minseo’s favorite CTD course, Intro to Psychology, led to her interest in psychiatry. Speaking about this course, she says, “Before the class began, I thought the class might be boring and filled with just anatomy facts. I found that I immediately grasped onto concepts… and was fascinated by how much science there was behind how people act and respond. I truly found a subject that I love, and left feeling hungry, curious for more.”

JAY is a fifth grader who has participated in over 20 Center for Talent Development (CTD) courses including Phun Physics, Scratch Programming, Digital Architects, and Debate the Issues. His favorite course at CTD thus far is How Things Work: Electronics because “…you get to deconstruct, reinvent, and work with a lot of stuff.” Jay has also enjoyed working on various projects in his CTD courses, particularly one where he created a dancing robot in a robotics course.

In his spare time, Jay plays sports, and especially enjoys kickball and running. He has competed in the track competition twice at his school. Jay also likes acting and takes improv classes at school and at the Mudlark Theater during the summer. Jay wants to one day be an entrepreneur. To achieve this goal, Jay believes CTD has given him “ideas on different ways to solve problems.”

Minseo has participated in summer residential programs at CTD and speaks highly of her experiences there — “…you meet friends who seem like you’ve known forever, participate in fun activities with your peers, and take part in challenging academic experiences that foster a love of learning…I would never trade those moments for the world.” Minseo believes CTD courses are “a great way to explore a field you might not be familiar with and really find your passion…CTD helps you grow an existing passion and explore more intricate, in-depth topics within that subject.” In her free time, Minseo enjoys watching movies, wrestling on her school’s wrestling team, and traveling. She describes herself as curious, determined, and boisterous. On how CTD has helped her achieve her goals, she says, “Students and teachers at CTD have taught me to be a better person for myself, others, and the community. CTD has had a profound effect on me and has shaped me to be a responsible and independent leader.”

RADHINI is a third grader who has participated in over 20 Center for Talent Development (CTD) courses since 2014, including weekend programs and summer Leapfrog. Unable to pinpoint a favorite CTD course, she says “I’ve liked all my CTD classes…I’m able to do things I wouldn’t do in regular school. For example, in the Digital Architects class, I learned to use websites I’ve never used.” Speaking to current and future CTD students, Radhini advises to “do your best. Even if you don’t do well the first time, you can always learn from your mistakes. CTD classes are very fun, and I’ve always liked them.”

Currently, Radhini wants to be a cancer researcher. She says “I hope to figure out some way to eradicate it.” In her spare time, she enjoys reading, and teaching her parents how to play piano. When asked what three words best describe her, she says, “I am not able to use only three words. There is so much more to me.” In regards to how CTD has helped her achieve her goals, Radhini says, “CTD allows me to share my ideas and goals with my peers…CTD exposes me to different courses and helps me become a more well-rounded student.”
