Microcontrollers in Action: Programming and Electronics (Grades 6-8)


How are hardware and programming connected? Understand how hardware and programming together make electronics come to life. Discover how to incorporate lights, motors, buttons, and sensors. Using circuit boards and microcontrollers such as the RaspberryPi or Arduino, write and test code for your hardware projects using languages such as JavaScript, Python, and Scratch. During this course, students will:


Investigate the relationship between coding and hardware applications Use programming languages to make electronics projects come to life


Identify, analyze, and reconstruct code to make programs run as smoothly as possible


CTD PATHWAY: This course is for students with a passion for coding and hands-on work with design technology. It is great preparation for future study in electrical and computer engineering and computer programming strands.


Online Writing Workshop (Grades 6-8)


How do you turn an interesting idea into a compelling story? Immerse yourself in the writing process with an online teacher and peers. Learn strategies for generating creative ideas and transform them into engaging stories. Explore techniques to create compelling plots and lifelike characters to bring new worlds to life. Practice editing skills useful in both creative and academic writing. Share your work with a supportive audience of classmates and have opportunities to share and discuss your work in flexible live chat sessions. During this course, students will:


Enhance their planning, writing, and editing skills Complete a 5 to 15-page story Participate in a close-knit, collaborative writing community


CTD PATHWAY: This course challenges students with an interest in honing their writing and story development skills. It prepares students to write with more sophistication.

Immunology (Grades 7-8)


How does your body fight an infection? Explore the human body and the different mechanisms that allow us to fight diseases and everyday pathogens. Examine patterns, causes, and the effects of disease to improve understanding of how diseases spread. Investigate different infectious diseases, the history of deadly outbreaks, and the diseases scientists are fighting today. During this course, students will:


Discover the immune system and how it fights infection


Identify the differences and learn about the various types of organisms that cause disease, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites Explain the symptoms and immune response behind specific diseases


CTD PATHWAY: This course is for students with a passion for the study of medicine, immunology, and biology. It is great preparation for future study in the biological sciences or medical sciences.


Leadership & Service (Grades 7-8)


What are the social issues that affect our communities, and how can you make a change? Visit nonprofit organizations throughout Chicago to engage in hands-on service and learn how to make a difference in the world. Prepare and serve a meal to those in need, lead activities for neighborhood children, or learn from local leaders about ways to make change. Return home inspired with ideas to make a difference in your own community! During this course, students will:


Gain introductory knowledge about a specific social issue Develop communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills Discover the motivation to become more active citizens


CTD PATHWAY: This course is for students who want to learn more about the issues facing their communities and develop leadership skills. It is a great an opportunity to explore potential careers in human services, public policy, and non-profit management.
