Sources and Bioavailability
C sinensis is native to Asia but is now grown worldwide. Green tea is available in several forms, including loose leaf, bagged tea, and powder. Because of promising data suggesting that green tea and its constituents promote health and deter disease, green tea has also been formulated as an extract (GTE) in the form of powder, capsule, and tablet dietary supplements. GTE can also be found as an ingredient within non-GTE supplements. According to the Dietary Supplement Label Database, there are over 36,000 products that contain green tea as an ingredient, and over 500 products that contain EGCG as an ingre- dient. Some GTE-based supplements, such as Exolise (Arkopharma), have been banned in European countries because of reports of hepatotoxicity. Among the different forms of green tea, GTEs were shown to contain the most bioavailable catechins and provide the largest reducing power against oxidative stress. Non-GTEs, such as bagged and loose-leaf green teas, were shown to contain nearly half the reducing power with substantially less catechin content.16
