 George Adams and Fred Smith transported Kennicott’s body down the Yukon River aboard a bidarra to Fort ST. Michaels where it was put in cold storage until the arrival of the Western Union supply ships.


 await the W.U. Supply ships. The Russian supply ship arrived with a year’s supply of food. The Russians at ST. Michaels were commanded to share their  waited. After two months the Russians cut their rations fearing that they would  once again, late in the fall the W.U. ships arrived. Food, supplies, 30 telegraph  Bulkley congratulated the men who spent a year in Russian America and promoted them to ‘Pioneer’ with promotion in grade and raise in pay. George Adams for instance was promoted to Pioneer 1st LT. with the same pay as a Captain. The steamer ‘Wilder’ made one trip to Unalakleet with men and supplies and then the river and Norton Sound froze up. The ‘Wilder’ was pulled up on the beach to sit useless all winter. Everyone had to hurry to enlarge and improve their quarters at Unalakleet. With 30 more men to feed, food and supplies had to be brought from ST. Michaels to Unalakleet throughout the winter by dog sleds.


Five men and the ‘Lizzie Horner’ left with the ships for San Francisco. Charles  had his face so badly frozen left as he didn’t think he could deal with another winter in the far north. Two other men who because of the stress and strain of waiting for the supply ships and thinking they would be left for a winter without  in California.


Three other men were assigned to the Unalakleet District. Frederick Whymper   ship ‘Golden Gate’ transferred to the land party with the rank of 1st LT. assigned as assistant astronomer and mathematician (surveyor).
