Figure 14: Otter-ly encouraging! Having not been spotted in the 70s and 80s, smooth- coated otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) were thought to have become extinct in Singapore – but then they were seen again in the city’s wetlands in the 1990s. Since 2007, these
otters have moved into the urban areas such as the man-made reservoirs of Serangoon and Punggol, as well as other highly urbanized places including Marina Bay and Changi Airport. These urban areas appear to offer otter populations a healthy supply of fish and suitable den sites safe from any disturbances, despite human presence
