Clay cutters
Although not absolutely essential, clay cutters are a great way to get started on the road to producing speedy finished pieces. Ideally choose examples made of stainless steel or plastic and ensure both inner and outer cutting surfaces are coated in badger balm or olive oil to prevent them from sticking to the clay. Small scale cutters can be purchased from cake decorating and craft suppliers in a variety of shapes and styles.
Distilled water
Water has a number of uses when working with PMC so it is always best to keep some to hand, either in a small spray dispenser or in a dish to use with a paintbrush. Distilled water is preferable as it contains fewer impurities but tap water will do. It can be used to re-hydrate PMC as it starts to dry out, keeping it workable, but will also help to bond pieces together and smooth surfaces as you are working. Water can also be mixed with PMC to make your own ‘slip’ or paste.
Playing Cards or spacers
General household playing cards are often used in conjunction with PMC and can be placed either side of your clay as you are rolling it out, to gauge and measure the thickness of your material. Ensure you have an equal amount on each side and check progress regularly as you are rolling. Plastic spacers can be used as an alternative to playing cards.
