Tip:
It is best to avoid metal surfaces when working with PMC, in particular aluminium (foils and trays) or anything containing aluminium, as it can react badly with the clay causing warping and discolouration.
Tools and Essentials—Shaping
Note: It is perfectly possible to work with PMC using only the bare minimum of specialist tools. Many household items can be effectively used to shape and texture your pieces without any significant outlay. Familiarise yourself with the material first and then buy your tools as the need arises.
Work Surface
Metal clay is sticky so you need to bear this in mind when choosing a work surface. Suitable choices include: A Teflon mat, sheet of glass, laminate worktop or plastic mat. Water is often used in conjunction with PMC so ensure working areas are waterproof or certainly water resistant.
