Designing with PMC
—Step by Step (torch method) • Design your item and consider what qualities are required for it to work e.g. strength, flexibility, fine detail etc.
• Choose your PMC accordingly.
• Set out your working area before opening the clay. Ensure everything you need is to hand to avoid delays once the clay is exposed to the air.
• Once the clay is open, take off the required amount and re-wrap any excess and place in an air tight jar or grip seal bag.
• Mould, roll and shape the clay until you have realised your design.
• Allow PMC to fully dry, (usually overnight). • Sand and refine any rough areas and broach out any holes.
• Place on a heat proof brick and start to heat with the torch, keeping the flame moving. The PMC will start to smoke as the binder is burnt away – don’t panic this is normal! As the PMC reaches a pale orange colour start timing and heat for the time advised on the packet (usually around 3mins). Always keep the flame moving to avoid overheating in one spot.
• Allow to cool. • Sand again if needed.
• Polish with a scratch brush, burnisher or polishing papers to finish.
