Overview of a STEM Event When Should You Have One?

STEM events are often successful in the peak summer season. However, you could run two events throughout the year – one catered to your summer population and tourists as well as one in the fall or spring targeted more at your organizational partners and school groups.

Where is a Good Location for a STEM Event?

The location of your event should be based on the activities you are planning to offer or the activities partnering organizations will be offering. Access to water or near bodies of water is often preferred. STEM events can be hosted indoors or when you are unable to access the water. You may need to be creative with materials for some activities, but everything is replicable with adequate pre-planning.

Benefits of Hosting a STEM Event

Events take extra work, but the benefits are worth it. STEM events can have the following outcomes:

• They access new people in your community and can lead to participants in your programs that have not been involved before.

• New partners may be interested in collaborating with your organization on programming, which could result in additional revenue and program expansion.

• STEM events demonstrate to your community that you care about them beyond just providing on-the-water programming. By educating the greater population, you are protecting

the waterways for the future.

Donors and potential funders will find value in these efforts and you can use the positive impact from the event as a talking point or statistic to celebrate and garner support from donors or community members. • Citizen science is an important priority foundations. When engaging the public

for many in marine

debris cleanups or sampling water quality for your local or state agency you are engaging many people in citizen science. It may be valuable to plan your event around National Citizen Science events or participate information.
