Community Boating Providence; Providence, Rhode Island Each year Community Boating Center in Providence, Rhode Island incorporates the Sailing through STEM Night Activities at their annual Renaissance Regatta Fundraiser. Activity stations are set up outside to engage kids, parents, and community members in the STEM, Sailing & Environmental Education concepts students explore through the Reach Initiative at CBC. The students run the activities and show what they know.

Rochester Yacht Club; Rochester New York In 2016, Rochester Yacht Club added a Sailing through STEM Night to the Friday night of their Us Sailing Junior Olympics Festival. They invited several local organizations to participate, many of which had never been to the Yacht Club before. The kids who participated had a chance to tour the US Border Patrol Boats and use their ROVs. They boarded the United States Coast Guard Boats and learned about careers in the USCG. A local professor from Rochester University presented on Land Forms in the Oceans and passed out information about Rochester University followed by a quick paddle around the basin. The sailing staff managed stations that included the Reach activities. Prizes were awarded through a raffle from local sailing companies.

Lakewood Yacht Club; Seabrook, Texas Alexander Hankins, a high school sailor took the initiative to start a Sailing Through STEM Night for the Junior Sailing program at Lakewood Yacht Club. “Organizing and implementing a ‘Sailing through STEM Night’ at my yacht club for the junior sailing program taught me how science and technology is applied to every aspect of sailing. I learned more from this program than was being taught to the campers. Through this experience, I have become motivated to learn more about STEM programs and how to apply my knowledge to my future college education and possible careers in the maritime industry.”

The program was implemented in 2015 for overnight campers participating in the summer youth sailing program at Lakewood Yacht Club. He solicited support from a local non-profit organization, community business, science teacher, and engineer to take part in the program. The non-profit organization demonstrated the local watershed and the impact of the water run-off on Galveston Bay.
