Activities Sailing Through STEM Night Stations and Activities


Station 1: Measuring Wind (Reach Module 1)


The kids will design and construct an instrument to measure wind speed. Have a few types of anemometers available to show them as an example. Once the kids build their design have them try and see if they can measure the wind speed of the box fan on low speed. They will need to use the assumption that 10 spins per minute is roughly 1 mile per hour. Wind speed reports are vital to our safety on the water.


Investigative Question: How do we measure wind if we can’t see it? Materials:


 Scissors  Box fan  Pencils  Masking tape  Pipe cleaners  Dixie cups


 Jumbo straws or eco-friendly paper straws


 Recycled materials  Whiteboard/ Bulletin board
