 10-12 boat hulls with a place to attach the sails: you can order these or just cut the same hull shape from 3M Styrofoam or have someone make wooden boat hulls with hole to insert the mast with the sail attached.

Station 4: Simple Machines (Reach Module 4)

Students will identify and explore the six simple machines. Review the six

simple machines with each group of

students or place example on a table. Give students 15 minutes to find as many simple machines on the property as possible. Students should work in groups of 3 or 4. Give each group a clipboard, pencil and scavenger hunt list. Please see the scavenger hunt card in Module 4. After the scavenger hunt, gather all of the students and review their findings.

Another version of this station is to set up a series of pulleys (block and tackles) with different ratios so kids can see the difference to lift a bucket of water without a pulley, with a pulley, with a 2:1 ratio, etc.

Pulley: Flag pole, mainsheet block Screw: Jar lid (screws on the boat), porthole cover Wheel and Axel: Car or dolly, helm, winch Wedge: Door stoppers or ramp, bow of a boat Inclined Plane: Ladder, ramp, dock ramp Lever: Stapler, winch handle
