The National Standard Excellence in Sailing Instruction

Learning to sail is part dream, part great instruction, and part hands-on experience. At US Sailing, all of these come together.

The Junior Big Boat Sailing (JBBS) Program provides sailing opportunities for young men and women (14-18) beyond traditional small boat programs. Ideally utilizing a well-outfitted 35-45 foot sailboat, the program focuses on helping teenage sailors learn the ropes on a big boat platform - or provide an experienced junior sailor the opportunity to apply their small boat sailing skills to a new challenge. The program highlights fun, socialization and teamwork with the goal of turning teens into valuable crew on cruising boats and club racers.

This Guide is a one stop shop on how to implement the JBBS program in your own organization. When paired with Basic Keelboat, it provides the instructor all the necessary resources to successfully introduce their sailors to larger keelboats. Inside you’ll find the following:

• Step-by-step setup guide • Eight (8) class outlines and lesson plans • Ten general guidelines for running the program • Bad weather/rainy day activities • Information on how to hold an open house for parents • Utilize and work with Local Fleets • Staff training guidelines • Checklist for meeting with the boat owner • Exemption from United States Coast Guard to hold the Junior Big Boat Program on a borrowed boat.

• “Cue Cards” that provide a position-by-position guide

Whether your sailors are looking to compete at the local level or are moving towards becoming a US Sailing Instructor, the Junior Big Boat Program provides them with a solid foundation.
