RETURNING TO THE DOCK Prepare the boat before returning to the dock. Have the fenders hung at the right height to safeguard the hull. Have the docklines attached properly to the boat and strung under the lifelines so they are ready to be used. Decide upon a plan for a controlled landing and inform the crew of their responsibilities. Be sure to have an escape plan if the landing isn’t going well. Once you are ready to approach the dock, do it carefully.

Instruct the group when situation permits on how to “flake” the main on the boom (or roll it if that’s what the boat does) and refasten the sail ties. Replace the sail cover and properly secure it.

After the boat is docked, secured and cleaned up, exit the boat in to the classroom for refreshments and snacks as you open up for questions and com- ments.

When nearing a side dock, ease out your sails on your approach to slow the boat A. As you come closer, steer up into the wind, letting the sails luff. Coast to a stop along the dock B. If the dock is short or has limited space, you will want to make your approach more slowly.

In making an approach to an upwind slip, ease the sails to slow your speed. Further decrease your speed, if necessary, by wiggling the boat back and forth on its course A. Once you are sure your speed is correct (fast enough to get you into the slip, but not fast enough to bang your bow), head into the slip B. If your speed is slightly high going into the slip, push the boom out to backwind the mainsail to help stop the boat.
