Pit / Runner

Primary position on vessel: The “Pit” (The area where halyard lines come together). If you are a Runner, you are in the aft section of the boat to manage the back stays from tack to tack Primary hiking position: When needed, next to Foresail Trimmer Primary responsibilities: Focus on the sheets, halyards and the mechanical equipment that is used to trim and hoist sails.

Check all running lines and halyards Handle dock lines as directed
Sit next to foresail trimmer if hiking (and not needed elsewhere)
Flake old halyard making sure all the lines are running freely
Assist as requested or hike
Release and shift lines to new windward side
Change lines and stays as needed
Ease halyard and foreguy. Flake the jib halyard, making sure all lines are running freely
Release the jib halyard, or coil jib with roller furling line. Adjust spinnaker pole height accordingly
Pit: Locate mark on topping lift line for drop and then, on command, drop the pole to the correct height Runner: Prepare to jibe stays

Returning to the dock (Both)
Flake the spinnaker halyard tail making sure its going to run free when needed
Flake the old spinnaker halyard. Making sure all the lines are running freely
Spinnaker Pack (Both) Assist if not busy
Pit: Ready boat for spinnaker maneuver, or hoisting of jib Runner: Ready for jibe, if necessary
Assist by slowly easing the main halyard until cringle is attached to horn
Handle dock lines as directed
Secondary Job Responsibility Assist as needed
Fend off as required
Be able to quickly return to positions (if needed)
Release old halyard and tail the new one
Be ready for changes
Clean deck (neaten up lines) and prepare for shift to other side
Prepare for next change Tail the spinnaker halyard Adjust the topping lift
Pit: Ease the topping lift to lower the pole to the correct height. Runner: Jibe stays on command
Release the spinnaker halyard and tail the jib halyard
Ease the old spinnaker halyard and tail the new one
Assist if not busy
Pit: Keep positioned for sail changes Runner: Ready for tack change
Stand by to tighten halyard when directed.
