BASIC POWERBOATING. SAFETY & RESCUE FOR SAILING INSTRUCTORS 71

CATAMARAN RESCUES Capsized Catamaran Rescue

If a catamaran has capsized and is lying on its side, the first method to use with smaller catamarans is the Mast Tip Lift Rescue (see page 65). Another method is to roll the catamaran upright using a towline as described below.

1 Check to make sure the sheets on the sails are slack and free, then tie a towline to the righting line of the catamaran. It is best if the towline is short, so that the angle of line from the catamaran hull to the towboat forms an angle of 45° to the water. This should minimize the problem of the catamaran being towed through the water and not coming upright.

2 Start to pull the catamaran upright.

Turtled Catamaran Rescue

If a catamaran has capsized and turtled upside down, this method will work for most situations.

3 Immediately slack off on the towline as the catamaran starts to come upright. If it comes up too quickly, the catamaran could capsize onto its other side.

1 Bring sailors on board the safety boat.

2 Tie a towline to the

trampoline frame near or at the base of the mast, and position the safety boat astern of the catamaran.

3

3 Increase the throttle to rotate the bow’s clear of the water and into the air until the catamaran falls onto its side.

4 Sailors go back into the water and perform a self-rescue. If the sailors are unable to go back in the water, the safety boat will proceed to bring the catamaran upright. Be aware that, without sailors in the water to grab hold of the catamaran, there is the risk of re-capsizing.
