BASIC POWERBOATING. SAFETY & RESCUE FOR SAILING INSTRUCTORS 39

Doubling a Line Doubling a dock line allows you to release a line from aboard the boat without any assistance from a person on the dock.

SPRING LINE DOCKING

A spring line can be used to bring and hold a boat alongside a dock by leading the line to the middle of the boat’s side. The large- angle approach described in Chapter 5 used this technique to overcome the boat being blown away from the dock.

Downwind Docking

With the wind (or current) from astern, any use of the engine for steering may cause a faster approach speed, which will require more distance and reverse power to stop the boat. Any increase in wind magnifies the problem. Once alongside the dock, the boat’s windage can cause it to rapidly drift down the dock or spin the stern out, unless an aft spring line running from the boat’s mid- length is quickly looped over a dock cleat. If the line is led to the bow cleat, the stern could swing out.

1Pass line around dock cleat and back to boat, making sure there are no knots in line that would snag on cleat.

2To release, let go of non- loop end, and as line slips past dock cleat, quickly bring it in to avoid getting it caught in propeller.

Approach dock at small angle at mcs.

2Turn boat WIND

parallel to dock and shift to neutral.

Shift to reverse and gently

increase throttle, turning wheel toward dock if necessary.

Close Quarters Docking

Before making this approach, stop and carefully check wind and current conditions. If you feel uncomfortable about the dock space, look for another location. Use the aft spring line to bring the boat alongside and to ensure the boat stops short of the boat in front. Pass the loop end of the spring line to a person on the dock, telling him which dock cleat to use, while you adjust the length of the line from the boat.

1

Approach slowly at mcs and at an

angle to clear boat tied to dock.

3 2

Quickly secure aft spring line and then other lines.

When bow is close to dock, start to turn boat and pass spring line to person on dock. Shift to reverse to stop boat and swing stern to dock.

Shift to forward against secured aft spring line to bring boat alongside dock and hold it in position until other lines are tied.
