How affordable robotics became a viable career choice for two tech-savvy friends


For friends Thiago Azevedo and Jeremy Lambert, leaving their respective jobs to


venture into the world of robotics – something they had been tinkering with since their university days – was a diffi cult decision. But having weighed up the risks and associated

with setting up their own tech start-up, the excitement of the project and being in control made them overcome their initial doubts. “After

market place and attending a few robotics conferences, I came to realise that there was a strong need for aff ordable robots,” Azevedo says. “This was still very diffi cult for existing companies because of the current cost of hardware, but after putting together a proof of concept using cheap drone components, I felt confi dent that we could scale the technology in a very aff ordable way... and here we are today!” Azevedo had been working for four years at a well-established robotics company when he


Robots realised this gap in the market – in particular,


the need for cheaper and more productive inspection services on industrial sites with the help of robots. After creating a small prototype that functioned, Azevedo and Lambert


then researching the affordable robots


set about looking for investors. “We were very lucky to get in touch early on with the British Robotics fund who were just starting themselves,” Azevedo adds. “It was the perfect match!” The fund provided the initial part of the seed investment, which allowed Jeremy to join and the team to start building prototypes. “We


still consider


ourselves to be at an early stage of our adventure, but


our investors and prospective clients love how nimble, dedicated and organised we are. Being able to design and build a fi rst prototype in under two months is a feat and it bears well with our plans to deliver our fi rst robots by the end of the year. “Prepare to work hard and encounter a lot of


obstacles along the way, but if you keep an eye on the short and mid-term objectives, and work towards them, rewards are guaranteed!”
