Taking on your fi rst member of staff can be a real red letter day for your company, but fi nding and choosing the right person for the job isn’t easy…


For many start-ups, the moment when they have grown big enough to take on their fi rst


member of staff is often felt to be the point at which their business has truly arrived. Not only are you your own boss, but now


you get to tell someone else what to do as well. It’s a sweet moment. But more importantly it usually means the business is generating enough turnover and enough workload for you to need help keeping things going. Your staffi ng requirements will obviously


be dependent on what type of business you’re running and at what kind of level you intend to employ people. You might need graduates or be able to off er apprenticeships, or even take on interns who will work in exchange for some much needed experience for their CV. Whatever you decide, you will fi rst need to


register as an employer with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) up to four weeks before you pay your new staff member. This process can take up to two weeks and you can’t register more


than two months before you start paying your new staff . So planning ahead is essential. It’s crucial to make sure this is in place, otherwise you are not going to get off to a great start with your protégé. If someone is joining the payroll, you are


going to need an actual payroll. The simplest way to do this is to leave it to your accountant. Many of them will off er such services. If you’re confi dent of handling it yourself, there are plenty of payroll software options, like Sage Business Cloud, Iris or Ceridian, which are available online for very little cost. For businesses with less than ten employees, free options even exist.


Whatever you choose to use it needs to:


• record your employees’ details • work out your employees’ pay and deductions


• report payroll information to HMRC • work out how much you need to pay HMRC • calculate statutory pay, for example maternity or sick pay

but where to look? Again, much depends on the type of person you need and the level of experience you require. Assuming you’re not yet going to be off ering senior management roles but rather more entry-level positions, you should tailor your search and where you do that searching accordingly.
