B IG PI C T U R E Ristafallet, Sweden About 10 miles east of Åre, a popular ski resort in central Sweden, is Ristafallet waterfall. In the winter months, it’s sometimes possible to hike very close to the falls once it’s begun to freeze over. The skier in the picture is my friend, Janne Tjernström. Janne lives very close to Ristafallet and hikes or travels on cross-country skis out to the falls most days, year-round. We waited about a month for the right conditions to take this image: for the trees to become covered in snow, the falls frosty with ice and a safe volume of water. It’s a truly exciting place. A new TV series adaptation of Astrid Lindgren’s beloved children’s book Ronja Rövardotter (Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter), is currently being shot in Sweden, with scenes set at Ristafallet.
